Hey all; I'm coordinator for the English program, and you can just call me Cindy. I come from a long way away--let's just say I know what it feels like to have oil gunked on bare feet at the beach. My Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing/Poetry is from Iowa, I've published in a variety of genres--mostly poetry but also experimental new media and hybrid forms--and my primary teaching interest is Creative Writing. I'm a kite and coffee fanatic. I miss the Sierras. I I think we should all rescue dogs from puppy mills.

Hello everyone! My name is Breken, and you may call me that or whichever nickname you choose. :) I am from Minot, and I LOVE reading and writing! I am a varsity cheerleader as well as a varsity dancer. Some of my favorite authors are Alice Sebold, Elizabeth Gilbert, Nicholas Sparks, and Jodi Picoult. I want to become a journalist, and I love writing about fashion and pop culture. I am in Governor's School to learn a lot and have a great time! :)

During the next three weeks of Governor's School, you can use this blog to record your observations and reflections about language. For instance, the sentence I showed you on the first day, pronounced in Lowland Scots English (the line from a Robert Burns poem, "It's a braw, bright night th' night") may prompt your observations and reflections about other varieties of English, for example here in North America. Perhaps while conversing with one of your classmates, you hear a word like "soda" or "tonic" for what you call "pop," or you hear a pronunciation different from what you say.

As you post your observations/reflections, I'll add commentary to tell you why such differences occur and where they come from.

I hear a lot of people from ND say "pop" but I also have quite a few friends from elsewhere who find it funny when I use that particular word. I try to say "soda" because it seems more universal, but I'm not entirely sure. A friend of mine from the SE U.S. used to work at McDonald's and customers here look at her strangely when she asks them what kind of "coke" they want. Where she is from, there are different types of "coke", not just the regular and diet flavors that most North Dakotans think of. I find all of this really interesting... :)

I'm from Calif., and grew up referring to ALL soda and pop as "coke"! Took my husband (from Minnesota) awhile to figure it out.

My name is Mallory and I live in Williston. I had to drive 7.5 hours to be here and let me tell you I'm going to make the most of those long, boring, repetitive hours on the road! I have three brothers so I like to think that I can handle almost anything, thanks to them. Anyways, I like movies, books, playing my bassoon (!) and working at the coffee shop. I don't know what I want to be when "I grow up" but I am fairly certain I don't want to be a teacher. I would like to write or act or play my bassoon for the world to hear, I think. I just want to change the world. Pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes are my favorite foods - just not together.

Greetings all! I'm Katrina Rudisel, and I've lived in Fargo all my life. I've too many favorite books to list, but I've an avid hater of the Twilight series. I love to write persuasive speeches and essays for some reason, although I wish I could write better poetry and stories. My hobbies consist mainly of playing piano, listening to music, dancing, and surfing the internet. I decided to apply to Governor's School because I wasn't satisfied with what I learned in English class this year (mostly the lack of challenge and a clash with the teacher), and I wanted to feel like the year wasn't a total waste.

Heya!! I'm Hope. I'm from Hunter, but I live outside of town about 5 miles. I love playing my tenor sax...it is amazing!!! I write free verse poetry...so whatever I feel like writing about I guess. A lot of my stuff is nature orientated. I have three brothers like Mallard does. My favorite food is spaghetti and my favorite color is blue. I love cats so I'll probably end up being The Cat Lady when I'm old and gray.

Hey! Morgen Quintus here. I am from Mandan, ND. I like to spend my free time longboarding, reading, writing, texting, swimming, spending time outside, doodling, and making up grand schemes with my buddies. I like to write just about anything, but my favorite would have to be descriptive essays. Like Hope I have three siblings, but unlike her, mine are all girls. I love Governor's school so far (mostly :) ), and I am getting a lot from it so far and can't wait to see how far we all come!

Hello all, Sarah Greene here. I live in Fargo, at the moment, but was born in Maryland (where I will be moving back for my junior & senior year), and I've also lived in Montana. In my free time I enjoy listening to music (my favorite genre is Metal), blogging on my Tumblr, reading [interesting] books (my favorite authors are John Green & Malorie Blackman), traveling, and writing whatever comes to mind. My favorite types of writing are essays, short stories, and free verse poetry. I'm also a reporter for my school paper in the Entertainment section, typically writing reviews. I'd like to study Comparative Ethnic Studies and Journalism in college, pursuing a career as a journalist. I am absolutely in love with photography, quotes, & song lyrics. I came to Governor's School to further my writing skills and do something productive with my summer. :)

"Pop" vs. "soda" vs. "coke" (to refer to all carbonated sugar beverages) turns out to be one of the main markers of regional isoglosses (linguistic boundaries) in the U.S.

When I taught at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, two of my students, conducted a study of the isogloss running down the center of Wisconsin, where "pop" is preferred in the west and "soda" in the east. You can read their published study at this site: http://www.uwstout.edu/rs/2007/Linguistic%20Study%20PopvsSoda.pdf

Be sure to scroll down to the map at the end of the article, or view it on the Website where it was originally posted at http://www.popvssoda.com/

Hello!! I'm Kelsey and I'm from West Fargo. I like to hang out with friends, listen to music (almost any kind I will like), text random people (the more random the better), color, and go out to random parts of the state. I like to read the typical teen romance novels, books like "In Your Bed" and "Lock and Key." I am in Gov School because I want to further my English knowledge. I feel like my AP English class at my high school really helped, but I want to be even more prepared when I go into my senior year.
