I feel I have a better understanding of the sub-disciplines, such as rhetoric and linguistics. I feel I know better what they are and I think I would feel comfortable discussing them in the future.

Yes, English Studies probably is as appropriate as a name can be for this discipline.

I have no further questions. I understand now that English Studies is composed of numerous different things, grammar not being nearly as dominant as I suppose most people would think it is.

Maybe more and more sub-disciplines will be created. I don't know.

Well I suppose I will take back everything, but what i think I will use the most is our practice in analyzing literature.

English studies is the study of everything--in a sense. It's reading, writing, and speaking. It's how we say things, the way we say them, how they sound, what it means, ..it's basically analyzing everything and anything to death. I think that English studies is an appropriate name, it sounds broad, but English is super broad! The future of English studies seems to be a lot of stuff. Tech writing is becoming more popular in this day and age, and creative writing has always been popular, so I can't wait to see what it brings. At my high school I will be able to help my classmates now with English problems. I think that the homework will be a lot easier than these last few weeks, not that these weeks were super hard :) I think I will be able to have a better understanding of everything I do in English class and I'll be able to make assignments even better than I've done before.

I can understand more of what English is from these last 3 weeks. I mean obviously I knew what English was coming into the program, but I feel like it comes more naturally than it did before and I feel like I just completely understand it more. I would say "English Studies" is an appropriate name. What we did over the last 3 weeks was study English. I will be taking back a better understanding of the area I want to study. I will be able to help my peers more and give them better feedback on any writing they have me look at. I will also take back a new type of literature, flash fiction.

I came into this English program not knowing what to expect. When I learned that we would be learning about linquistics and rhetoric and so many other studies, I was overwelmed. I had no idea what many of them were.
I think learning so much in so few days was overwelming too. It seemed like we were always switching gears and going going going. I think we should have spent more than just a day on each study. I wanted to get to understand each study better.
I think that English Studies is a very good name, although the future of English Studies is, English Studies is going to get even more vauge.
I really really enjoyed this life changing experience, and I am so glad I got the opportunity to come and learn so much more.

English studies are the studies of literature written in the English language. This includes the way it is written now and the way it was written in history (i.e. old English). I definitely would like to learn more about the English studies, mostly rhetoric. I will probably take rhetoric back with me to history. In years to come, English Studies will probably be broadened even more!

I think community of disciplines is the perfect term for English Studies. Each section is different, yet all work together in some way. Maybe you should switch the name from Enlish Studies to Community of Diciplines. Haha. But, yes, I find the name English Studies appropriate. It's a broad enough term that it encompasses all the different subtopics.
I don't think I have any questions other than why, if you decide to get a graduate degree in English, you almost always end up teaching. I don't want to teach. At all. So if I know now that I will most likely end up teaching, I'm probably not going to end up going into English.
There is so much I'm going to take back to my school. Not only cutting the stupid stuff from my poems but also how to analyze literature when I'm reading. I think that skill will be especially useful next year since my school places a lot of emphasis of that. I will also take back the different types of writing so I can write in different ways for my class. I think, though, that what I'm taking away from here that I didn't know pretty much anything about before is Flash Fiction. I love it. One of the first things I'm doing when I get home, besides sleeping in my own bed, is going to the Library!

From what I've learned English Studies is extremely hard to name and even more difficult understand its many different topics and subtopics.

My understanding of English has very much changed. As of right now I have know idea what I had thought I knew about it from what I had learned previously. I learned that I knew pretty much close to nothing.

I know now what I'll be taking with me back to my school. All my knowledge, or at least 3 weeks of it, of English Studies that I have gained here. Such as the different creative writing styles, rhetoric, linguistics, and media studies. It has been a great experience and I'm really glad I came.

English is so much more than I expected it to be! I used to think it was just a mish-mash of writing, reading, and grammar, but really there's so much intricacy in the field that isn't even hinted at in my high school. I wish my school would call it "English Studies" because it is the most accurate term I can think of to encompass all that English is. There may be something better for it out there, but if the people who study language can't think of a better title, than there probably isn't! English Studies works because it hints at the disciplines that fall under English.

I would guess that in the future, English will be even bigger than it is now. Already the field has changed from its original, and I expect that as the language changes, so must the study. For example, there may be an entire field that opens to study the internet speak and text speak that my generation has come up with (I know it's studied, but I think it could be a field of its own).

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: last year, my English class sucked. Because of this, I signed up for gov school in English in an attempt to "make up" for the year I felt I've lost. Honestly, I think I've gained so much more than what last year could have given me. Forms of poetry, writing styles, focuses for papers (and so much more) are things I can apply to future writing.

I feel that i have learned a lot during this 3 week course. We aren't exposed to any of this at my school, so it's hard to understand, yet it's worth it. I'm still not sure what it exactly means, but I do know it's a growing field. I don't think it will ever end. They will keep making up sub-disciplines..and such, and also break down the ones already legit.

Questions still remain for me in the areas of Rhetoric and Linguistics. I would have enjoyed delving further into these disciplines that deal with the study/use of language - visual language to the English language.

For one of our literary magazines, I really would have liked to write an essay or commentary on Caribbean Dialects because it is an area of dialect studies that lies close to home, so to speak (my mom is from Trinidad, in the Caribbean).

Rhetoric intrigued the side of me that aspires to become a magazine editor because studying visual culture/picking apart ads provides us with experience in creating ads or deciding which would appeal the best to whatever audience your magazine caters to. Though still a bit vague, the study of Rhetoric particularly intrigued me.

With that said, I find it to be safe to say that English is so much more than just "Literature." When someone would say, "English major!" the first thing that would pop into my head was books -- the reading of boring books. And though it is true that we did read books and analyze works of Literature in our time here, I have also found English to be much more wide-ranging. And it is the other, less known disciplines that intrigue my curiosity the most. :)

I learned that there's more than just one or two subdisciplines in English Studies. I think that I have grasped a basic understanding of the disciplines that we did cover. I think that English Studies is a appropriate name. It's not just reading or writing and since it's such a broad subject that's probably the most specific it can get. I didn't think that "English" included interpreting different things such as film studies. I think English Studies will continue to expand and evolve as time goes on because of our fast-paced changing culture. I will be taking back to school the different ways to write and analyze text.

I never realized there was SO much to English studies! There are so many sub-studies it makes my head spin. I learned a more in depth about rhetoric and composition studies. I knew quite a bit already about the other studies, so it was mostly rhetoric and comp studies that were new to me.

I think "English studies" is, most of the time, an appropriate name. It includes close to everything, so it fits. The only study I could foresee a problem would be linguistics.

My overall understanding of Enlgish has been greatly changed. I no longer know just the basics, I got a crash course in everything that English studies entail. It was a lot of fun to learn about!

I think that in the future English studies will continue to expand. There are constantly new developments and new parts of the language to study. I hope that I can be a part of it!

I will be taking back a fresh understanding of the word "English". English isn't just reading boring novels and writing over-the-top essays. I wish that more students would consider taking this English course so that they could learn what I did in these three weeks. I am going to pass it on to everyone who thinks that English only about Shakespeare and research papers!

What is English Studies?
I would have to say it is a little bit of EVERYTHING. It incorporates science and history and sociology and oh-so-many aspects of the world around us. It is the explanation/examination/interpretation and the structure and science of communication and expression. So, in reality, I don't really know what English Studies is.

I don't know if I completely understand the "community of disciplines", but I have at least developed an idea of what they kind of are. They are all interesting, and I never realized that English is SO big. Really. It's huge.

Um...questions..there is still so much to know about everything. There is still so much that is unknown. I don't know. I just know the most basic of the basics of English, and that is how my understanding has changed.

I haven't the slightest idea of what the future of English Studies will be.

Well, unfortunately, I can't take my professors back to high school with me, but I will try to remember most of what I learned and take that with me. I will try to take my writing freedom with me, if that makes sense...Also, I will try to take my motivation with me. And all of those "terrible" high school metaphors that Cindy showed us :) I love them.

Gov school was a phenomenal experience, and I really wish that it was six weeks long. I feel like we'll be missing out on a lot, and I don't really want to go back to real life. This was awesome, and I don't want it to seem like a dream when I return to Mandan. I will miss you all.
